VOLTA BLOG I In Volta you see history: Five elements that remain in the Quarter even after its completion

VOLTA BLOG I Five historical elements of Volta Quarter

The history of Volta Quarter dates back to more than 120 years ago when the first factory buildings were completed where a total of 10 million electric engines were manufactured and light was given to the city of Tallinn. Today, both historic limestone buildings and several fascinating elements have been preserved, some of which can be visited in the completed buildings already today.

History gives the Quarter its soul

The biggest attractions in the industrial districts of North-Tallinn are their story and identity. Its more than 120 year old history gives Volta Quarter its character, which city residents can relate to precisely because the former factory buildings are being reconstructed and historic elements are brought to the fore in one way or another.

Centres created in historical building and building complexes are popular both in Estonia and other parts of the world. A building with a history of more than a century feels different and people develop a connection to the place and its past.

Door of a bomb shelter

During the development process and reconstruction, attempts have been made to preserve as much of the personality and history of the area as possible in every building. In the buildings on Tööstuse Street, one example of paying reverence to the history is the clean industrial style of the buildings.

Another piece of history is located in the interior of the Volta Lofts residential building completed at the end of 2018 under which a bomb shelter used to lie. The gilded door of the shelter found a new function as a stylish art object in the lobby of the building.

Golden-hued electric engine

The Volta factory used to manufacture electric engines, transformers, pumps, fans and heating units, ship parts, but also more domestic appliances such as irons, heaters, and waffle makers. Today, the waffle maker has become the symbol of the Volta Quarter, which has also inspired, for example, the architecture and design of Volta Residences.

In total, 10 million electric engines were manufactured in Volta over the century and to honour this, the 10 000th model, or a piece of history, was placed in the lobby of the first building completed in the Volta Quarter in 2016, the 47B Lofts. All history fans and others interested can go see the engine.

Industrial lamps

The third historical monument will be installed in Volta Gallery Lofts. Gallery Lofts are a limestone industrial building with a history of more than a hundred years where the famous electric engines and other machinery were manufactured since 1912.

Original industrial light fittings hanging from the ceilings were rescued from the former factory building, which were reconstructed in cooperation with the Estonian lighting designer Tõnis Vellama. The lamps are planned to be used again in the public areas of the building.

Beautiful arched windows and facade

There is another and a slightly larger piece of history hidden in Volta Gallery Lofts. During the reconstruction of the building, the limestone facade and the enchanting squared arched windows of the building will be preserved, to which an industrial accent will be given in the form of large and squared glass surfaces.

On the side of the second historic limestone building in the Quarter towards Tööstuse Street is a grand basilica-type arched facade, the original shape of which will be preserved after the reconstruction.

The Quarter will be completed in 2025

Volta Gallery Lofts located on Uus-Volta Street, i.e. loft-type terraced houses with ceilings up to six meters high and a courtyard and individual commercial premises will be completed this year. The first new A energy class buildings of Volta Residences will also be completed the same year.

In 2023, the Volta Villa will be completed. It is the main building of the former Volta factory, which was built in 1900 and is now being transformed into an apartment building with a historical flair. The next stages of Volta Residences and a park area where about 300 apartments and a park and leisure opportunities, i.e. playgrounds for children, ping pong tables, pétanque and ball court, and picnic and recreation areas, will be built will be completed in 2023 and 2024. The Quarter will also have its very own kindergarten.

In 2025, the last buildings of the Quarter, the Volta Lifestyle Centre, will be completed. This consists of two magnificent high-rise buildings built next to historic limestone buildings, one of which is an 85-apartment residential tower and the other a business tower with office spaces.
