VOLTA BLOG I Five new and hot places to eat in Northern Tallinn that deserve to be visited as soon as possible

VOLTA BLOG | New, exciting restaurants and cafes in North Tallinn

In North Tallinn, several large development projects are being completed, during which the historic industrial buildings of the district will be breathed into life in the In the Volta quarter, Manufaktuuri, Patarei Sea Fortress and elsewhere. In addition to development activities, various businesses are constantly moving to the district, and among them also new and exciting restaurants and cafes, which are already numerous in North Tallinn.

Telliskivi Idu

Recently, a salad bar Idu opened its doors on Telliskivi’s shopping street, which was brought to life by the desire to offer people a quick but healthy body fit. In its essence, Idu is like Estonia’s own Sweetgreen, or the best-known healthy food chain in the USA and favourite of young people in New York. You can put together an ideal warm or cold salad or snack in Idu, and everyone can eat: omnivores and vegans.

Northern Tallinn is a green district, and this is not only due to the abundance of green areas, but also to the companies operating in the district that care about nature and preserve the environment. Idu’s chefs have prepared the menu in such a way that each dish contains something healthy, and all raw materials are either domestic or come from as close as possible to us. The resource-demanding avocado grown on the other side of the ocean, for example, cannot be found on Idu’s menu.

Manufaktuuri Kohalik

This spring, the cafe Kohalik that previously operated in the Uue Maailma settlement moved to the apple orchard of the Manufaktuuri factory. The development of the quarter will bring more places to eat and entertainment to the place in the future. It is a favourite cafe for families, because there is plenty of activity and play space for children in the large apple garden. In the yard there are swings, hammocks, and nice cosy lighting for darker evenings. Pets are also welcome in the cafe.

The menu at Kohalik is quite classic: salads, soups, meat and vegan burgers, pastas, steaks and, of course, ice cream and pancakes are available. Fruit trees with apples and plums grow around the cafe’s terrace, which you can pick for yourself.

Cafe Brasil on Tööstuse street

Next to the Volta Quarter, or at the end of Volta Street, there is now also a Brazilian restaurant Cafe Brasil where you can get probably the best Brazilian coffee and traditional Brazilian tea in the city. The food menu is exotic and a little mysterious: for example, a salad made from palm kernels, deep-fried cassava, or plantain chips.

Traditional braided carpets and plenty of greenery and plant beauty on the walls, tables and ceilings contribute to the creation of an exotic atmosphere. Cafe Brasil also has a separate shop corner where you can buy good and better Brazilian goods.

Kalaranna Resto

At the city end of the Kalaranna quarter, i.e., near the Kalaturu operating next to the Linnahall, there is Kalaranna Resto. For seafood fans, there is a selection of oysters, clams, shrimps, and various fish dishes, but even those who do not like fish will find something to their liking.

The restaurant and the terrace offer a view of the city and the sea, and after a good meal you can walk along the Kalaranna road or the seaside promenade to the Patarei Sea Fortress, Noblessner, the Volta quarter or the Kalamaja park.

Viru Burger x Volta Resto

Estonia’s most loved burger chain Viru Burger recently opened its doors in the Volta quarter, in the recently completed Volta Lofts building, at Tööstuse 47D. At the restaurant, visitors can enjoy a wide selection of burgers and hand-made fries, and on the spot you can see a model of the Volta quarter and a timeline. The head chef of the restaurant is Mart Klaas, and Viru Burger made it to the list of restaurants recommended by the White Guide in both 2021 and 2022. The burger selection is wide, and every now and then something new and exciting can be found on the menu.

In fact, on the same street you can also find the Japanese food place Yui and a few houses further on Pizza Wabrik and Kalamaja, one of the nicest cafes, Salt’s Up, which is actually a salt shop, but offers, among other things, good muffins, and other bakery products.

The choice is expanding

Several major projects will be completed in North Tallinn in the coming years: Noblessner, which is almost ready, and the Volta Quarter, Patarei Sea Fort, Krulli, Manufaktuuri and the planned Bekker Quarter at the top of the peninsula, which will take a few more years. The development brings both people and various businesses and companies to the district to ensure that residents have the necessary services and entertainment close to home.

Northern Tallinn is already able to compete with the city centre and other districts in terms of the number of places to eat. In the future, it will be one of the city districts with the widest selection of places to eat, where Michelin-starred and Bib Gourmand-recognized restaurants will come together in Noblessner, street food in Patarei Merekurtsini, Telliskivi, Balti Jaam and Põhjala factory, as well as a wide selection of pleasant cafes and eateries across the whole district.

You can take a look at the development of the Volta Quarter on Volta’s website.
