VOLTA BLOG | Exclusive townhouse-type homes in Volta Quarter

There are many different residential spaces in large cities around the world – apartment buildings, regular houses, but also townhouses or terraced house-type, which are slightly less known in Estonia. While these types of living spaces are a rather rare phenomenon in Estonian cities, by the end of this year, the first unique terraced houses located in the middle of the city will be completed right at the heart of Kalamaja.

Living spaces with a long story

The best-known examples of terraced houses can be found, for example, in New York’s Manhattan district, San Francisco, London and Paris, where these types of living spaces have been built in historical builds with grand architecture. Endover is building Estonia’s first terraced house in a densely populated area in the historical Volta Quarter in the 172-metre-long limestone building with arched windows dating back to the beginning of the previous century.

The building of Volta Gallery Lofts is planned to have townhouse and loft-type apartments with up to six-metre-high ceilings and layouts through three floors. Homes of up to 150 square metres also include a 100 square metre personal landscaped lawn and terrace.

The homes of Volta Gallery Lofts are spacious and designed through several levels

The best of two worlds

Elsewhere in the world, terraced houses have historically been popular in densely populated areas and in the city centre area, but in Estonia, the townhouse culture was first established in suburbs in the form of new developments. The main value of townhouses is best seen in a busy urban environment.

The quiet surroundings and the immediate proximity to the sea of the homes of Volta Gallery Lofts enhance the peaceful and private vibe of a private residence, while everything necessary for life is just a few minutes away, as is characteristic of a city. A terraced house combines the advantages of two different living spaces – the functional design and comfort of an apartment building and the privacy, greenery and spaciousness characteristic of a private residence.

The high ceilings and spaciousness of the former factory building made it possible to build the homes of Volta Gallery Lofts over three levels. The second floor is entirely made up by the master bedroom, i.e. a private area with a luxurious bedroom, which includes a spacious bathroom and walk-in wardrobe.

Children’s bedrooms with separate shower rooms are planned on the third floor, which can be reconfigured into, for example, a quiet and peaceful office for those who want to work from home. The third option is to design the entire floor into, for example, guest bedrooms or a studio for working on some hobby.

The first floor features a large living room and kitchen for spending quality time with family and receiving and entertaining guests. The living room leads directly to the courtyard where you can have pleasant get-togethers and barbecue parties with friends and evenings. Privacy is ensured by a hedge, planter boxes and trees planted in the yard.

A piece of history also shows through the floor-to-ceiling squared windows in the living room. As it was originally a double-nave building, the entire courtyard is actually built inside a former industrial building, and a limestone façade with arches at the back of the courtyard will be preserved.
