VOLTA BLOG | Hidden treasure from the early 20th century: Volta Gallery Lofts is almost ready

The end of the year brings about an exciting moment in the Volta Quarter development: one of the rarest buildings in the whole quarter – a 172-meter-long limestone building with arched windows, dating back to the beginning of the previous century – will be completed.

Volta Gallery Lofts features spacious townhouse- and loft-type homes with six-meter-high ceilings and three-floor layouts as well as commercial premises in different sizes.

A place of history and soul

Places with a unique and thrilling story have always been in high demand in the property market and some of the most fascinating examples can be found in the old industrial areas of Põhja-Tallinn. The distinct history and soul of a place can be both seen and felt in Volta, Noblessner and Krulli. Each area has cultivated its very own unique identity and vibe which has become an essential attribute to people in search of a new home.

Volta Gallery Lofts is a former industrial factory building which produced millions of electric engines, home appliances and other machinery throughout the 20th century. The exact date and time of construction is unknown but, based on archive data, it has been ascertained that the building was constructed in 1912.

Volta Gallery Lofts combine the advantages of two very different types of homes: the functional design and comfort of apartment buildings and the privacy, greenery and vast space of a private residence. In other words: the best of both worlds. Quiet surroundings and immediate proximity to the seaside enhance the peaceful and private vibe of your own house while the city center with everything you need is just a few minutes away.

Volta Gallery Lofts will be completed by the end of this year.

Unique planning

The reconstruction of a building with such a long history presents several challenges for all parties involved: the developer, architects and the construction company. On the other hand, vast spaces, heights and giant windows typical of industrial architecture allow for some truly unique and special designs.

The first floor features a large living room and kitchen for spending quality time with family and entertaining guests. The second floor in its entirety is the master bedroom: a private area with a luxurious bedroom, which includes a spacious bathroom and a walk-in closet.

The third floor features children’s bedrooms with separate shower rooms but these can be easily reconfigured into guest bedrooms or a quiet and peaceful office for those working from home or a studio for working on your hobbies.

One of the most charming characteristics of a townhouse is a 100-square meter individual courtyard and terrace accessible directly through the living-room. Privacy is ensured by a hedge, planter boxes, seasonal flower beds, and trees planted in the yard.

A window to the past

The vast floor-to-ceiling squared windows in the living room look upon a piece of actual history. Volta Gallery Lofts was originally a double-nave building and the entire courtyard is actually constructed inside a former industrial building. An arched limestone façade wall will be preserved back of the courtyard as a remnant of history.

Another tribute to history is the original industrial light fittings hanging from the ceilings which were recovered from the former factory building and later restored with the help of the renowned Estonian lighting designer Tõnis Vellama. The restored lamps will be installed in the public areas of the building.
