VOLTA BLOG | Check out the new show apartment in the historical Volta Gallery Lofts

The construction of Volta Gallery Lofts – the 172-metre historical limestone building dating back to 1912 – was completed earlier this year and today, it has been reborn as a modern residential and business building. The very first show apartment is also ready for visitors.

Maarja-Linda Taur, Endover’s creative director, gives us the story of the interior design selected for the show apartment.

Unique planning allows for some truly great ideas

Volta Gallery Lofts is distinctive in its use of space and light, high ceilings and massive checkered windows, all akin to industrial architecture, resulting in outstanding interior design solutions.

“The homes in Volta Gallery Lofts dazzle with 6.4-metre ceilings that make you crane your neck. As the name of the project suggests, the vast space allows you to compile a gallery of your favorite pieces of art, be it a large oil painting, a collage of photos or both. There is space for everything,” assured Maarja-Linda.

The main attraction is the 5-metre-high checkered and arched windows and the views on the green private terrace framed by the historical limestone facade in the back. “This delightful view is the very first element of design in your new home as it will obviously become the focal point of the entire room,” added Maarja-Linda.

What is the story of the show apartment?

“Every show apartment starts out with interior finishing. In this apartment, we have combined both Deluxe finishing packages,” explained Maarja-Linda. “We settled on light tones with whitened fish-tail parquet flooring and large delicately textured ceramic tiles in the bathrooms. The overall light tones are accentuated by matte-black design switches and doorknobs by Jung.”

The planning of the Gallery Lofts apartments was created in collaboration with Aet Piel and the results are both comfortable and functional. “For the kitchen area, the client may choose between two solutions – one with a kitchen aisle and the other with a dining table,” said Maarja-Linda.

The interior design was inspired by the existing 3D visualizations for the project. “The interior design is largely based on the client profile – people who value history, design, art and travel. We combined modern and industrial styles with a pinch of mid-century modern which is currently gaining popularity.”

Inspired by the arched windows, curved and round shapes can also be observed in the selection of carpets, sofas, dining tables and even smaller details and accessories. Round shapes help bring softness to the interior and balance the powerful industrial style of the overall building.

Looking up in the living room, you will find a designer lamp by Karman Leda which in turn creates round shapes with light. This creates a very architectural look both from the living room and especially from the second level bedroom.

Maarja-Linda suggests visitors pay extra attention to accessories – the apartment was decorated with the help of Atelier and several of their products are well represented in the rooms. “The kitchen table features porcelain by Sieger, smaller tables display vases by GUAX and the bedsheets in the bedroom are 100 percent cotton. Art by Lóbjet and Giobagnara leather trays provide nuance.”

Design choices that mirror space

Volta Gallery Lofts is a multi-level townhouse apartment and as such it requires ample amounts of closet space. In addition to the huge wardrobe in the hallway, the apartments feature a roomy storage room, spacious walk-in closets and lots of cupboard space.

The apartments come with already furnished bathrooms with beautiful oak-paneled sink closets and LED-mirrors with 3 sensors. “The last touch is the mesmerizing ripple-glass shower walls and premium world-class mixers by AXOR,” said Maarja-Linda.

Kitchen the star of the apartment

The most striking part of the show apartment is undoubtedly the kitchen – designed intentionally to look unlike a stereotypical kitchen – which blends smoothly into the living room. There are no wall cupboards but an elegant marble shelf with a light.

The use of uniquely patterned marble is currently very trendy and more and more homes feature bold patterns and color play. The kitchen wall of the show apartment is covered entirely by a large slab of marble which gives off the impression of a large art piece.

“Instead of the usual stovetop with a vent above we chose a vent system integrated into the kitchen countertop. The wall next to the kitchen features a prominent floor-to-ceiling glass cupboard for storing dishes and glasses,” explained Maarja-linda.

Light and art

Special emphasis has been placed on lighting – in addition to traditional ceiling lights the apartment features wall lights and lots of mood light which helps create just the environment for every time and event. The historical limestone facade with lighting in the back yard and a cozy terrace with lights add special ambiance.

According to Maarja-Linda, art is what brings everything together in a home – art pieces are displayed both on the living room and bedroom walls. “The star of the apartment is a large oil painting in the living room. The patterns on the painting are perfectly in tune with the calacatta viola marble in the kitchen and the delicate brown and purple undertones tie the rooms together,” said Maarja-Linda. “With such high ceilings it is important to pay attention to the height of the art pieces on the walls. A lower height keeps everything in the room together. A slight thematic intrigue is created by mixing photos depicting prices among the art. This raises some more interesting questions about the base values in our society.”

Volta Gallery Lofts features a stunning gallery of photos titled DREAM by Andro Kööp who insists that the driving force in life is dreaming. “Every person must dream and the bigger the better. Dreams are what get us ahead in life. Dreams are the wind beneath our wings. Some dreams might be pricey but this should not be a reason to give up on a dream that might appear unattainable because you can never know what life has in store for us. Merely possessing a dream may help us in incredible ways.”
