VOLTA BLOG I Make balconies and terraces trendy and tidy for the new summer season!

The fine summer weather is soon here and itā€™s time to check up on your balconies and terraces in order to have a good time with family and friends in the summer. Almost each home in the Volta Quarter has a balcony, a terrace or even an outdoor space which means that you are positively spoiled for choice. Maarja-Linda Taur, Creative Director at Endover, and Sirje Nikolajeva, founder of the RannamƵisa Garden Salon, shared tips for freshening up balconies and terraces for the new season.

How does a home benefit from a balcony or a terrace?

In recent years, people have begun to spend more time at home which means that the home has to fulfil more functions than before. The home has become the place where you relax, work, work out and spend time with family and friends. Maarja-Linda says that this change has led to a situation where people specifically seek a home with a balcony or a terrace.

ā€œThe balcony can be used to relax quietly and read a book in fresh air, or to work out or sunbathe in warmer weather. With a larger terrace area, you can have nice grill parties and gatherings at home.ā€

Almost every home at the Volta Quarter has a terrace of up to 56 square metres or a spacious balcony. Each loft at the Volta Gallery Lofts has its own outdoor space besides a private terrace.

What kind of furniture should you choose for the balcony?

Maarja-Linda says that the interior design trends are also being extended to outdoor spaces and natural, organic and sculptural shapes and use of materials also feature in the product ranges of outdoor furniture. During Covid-19, brands began to focus more on home-related products and comfort. ā€œAs clothing brands are offering a wider selection of comfortable lounge clothing, we are glad to see that well-known manufacturers of interior design products have extended their scope with ranges of outdoor furniture,ā€ Maarja-Linda says. ā€œEverything to give the new generation the chance to live la dolce vita.ā€

A recent good example is the acknowledged Danish manufacturer Gubi whose popular Patcha lounge chairs are now available specifically for outdoor use. Various design side tables add even more character.

Among different materials, furniture made of cement fibre is an example of originality and durability. A robust material moulded into organic, flowing shapes looks industrial-inspired and welcoming at the same time. Outdoor furniture by Swisspearl is a great example, especially the stylish Sponeck Chair lounger.

How can you make a terrace or a balcony cosy?

In order to create a cosy atmosphere and mood on a terrace or a balcony, you should also choose lighting to complement the outdoor furniture so you donā€™t have to go back inside when dusk falls or if the weather is cloudy. Outdoor lights or a fireplace with natural flames prolong the summer evenings in a pleasant way.

You can also experiment with different textiles in order to add softness and warmth to the balcony. Carpets, throws and decorative cushions are excellent for turning the terrace or balcony into an extension of the home and connect the indoor and outdoor spaces.

A third tip is to bring a bit of greenery to the balcony.

Which plants are suitable for balconies?

The night frosts of this spring have passed and the balcony or terrace can safely be decorated with all kinds of flowers, potted plants, herbs and vegetables or smaller decorative trees. Itā€™s a great opportunity for city-dwelling plant enthusiasts to enjoy some gardening or even grow tomatoes.

Speaking of flowers, for instance, Sirje recommends pansies for balconies, as they can tolerate bad and windy weather. In warmer weather, hyacinths, petunias or lobelias flower beautifully. When it comes to perennials, various rose varieties such as Aspirin or Frankfurter can grow well in containers on balconies. Of leafy houseplants, peace lily is a species that enjoys fresh air ā€“ these houseplants thrive on a balcony or a terrace in the summer.

Maarja-Linda notes that container plants that have long dominated street environments elsewhere in Europe are seen more and more in Estonia. ā€œPeople are becoming more confident in choosing perennials for balconies and terraces,ā€ she adds. ā€œLarger containers and pots also allow growing more tropical plants such as palm, banana and olive trees on balconies or terraces.ā€

Growers of tropical plants should keep in mind to avoid damage due to intense sunshine or wind outside. ā€œIf a person is exposed to sun unprotected after the winter, they get sunburn ā€“ the same applies to plants,ā€ Sirje explains. ā€œPlants are not used to bright sunlight after the long winter, so they should be kept in a more shady place in the beginning or gradually acclimated to morning or evening sun.ā€

Sirje notes that itā€™s not only beautiful flowers and leafy plants that can grow well on a balcony but also grasses, which are suitable for those who prefer low-maintenance plants. Grasses are fast-growing, undemanding and remain attractive well into late autumn. ā€œThere are all kinds of grasses: low and tall, with various colours, stripes or tufts,ā€ says Sirje. ā€œBesides annual options, there are also species that come back next spring.ā€

Even larger plants may be considered for more spacious balconies or terraces. Decorative trees such as lilacs, apple trees and magnolias but also e.g. box trees, smaller pine species, thujas or cypresses look very impressive on a balcony. ā€œThe last-mentioned trees are evergreen and donā€™t need to be moved indoors for the winter, they may overwinter on an insulated balcony,ā€ Sirje explains. ā€œJust keep an eye on them and donā€™t let them get scorched in the hot spring sun.ā€

Itā€™s always a good idea to have a couple of lavender pots on the balcony, this plant has a pleasant aroma and repels nasty mosquitoes. The flowers can be dried after blooming to make natural aroma sachets for the home.

You get the most interesting results by combining different species, colours and shapes. Donā€™t hesitate to ask experts for advice, they are even willing to do home visits in order to help the customer to design a beautiful balcony or terrace according to personal taste.

The Volta Quarter will be completed in 2025

Endover is building a green residential and commercial quarter of 29 buildings on the former Volta industrial estate. As a whole, it will form a mini-city with everything necessary for living and working available within walking distance.

According to the initial plan, the 11.25-hectare quarter will be completed by 2025 but the Volta Gallery Lofts and Volta Residences on Uus-Volta street will be finished as soon as this year.
