VOLTA BLOG | New kindergartens and schools: can North Tallinn keep up with the increasing number of inhabitants?

Several large-scale development projects in North Tallinn are set to be completed within the upcoming years, resulting in substantial influx of new residents in the area.

The district is particularly popular among families, given its suburbanesque peace and quiet, greenery, nature trails and beaches as well as the comfort of living in the heart of the city with a versatile range of services and entertainment. This has increased the demand for new kindergartens and schools as well as areas for leisure activities – can the district accommodate its new residents?

How do you wish to spend your life?

The first thing to consider when choosing a home for your family is whether everything you need in your daily life is located near enough to your new home. The less time you spend on the commute to work, school, your children’s hobbies or shopping, the more time and energy you have for everything else.

Studies have shown that more than 30 percent of Estonians spend over 30 minutes every day commuting to work. A little under 10 percent take over an hour. Calculating in the trips to the grocery store, the gym or the movies, you discover that you spend an alarmingly large proportion of your life behind the wheel.

A good solution to this is a comprehensive approach to development which does not only create new buildings and homes but develop new and complete urban environments. Volta quarter in the heart of Kalamaja district is built on precisely this principle: everything you need for your daily life at home and at work is a mere 5-10 minute walk or bike ride away. A personal car is no longer a necessity.

An environment created for families

The quarter is designed specifically for families with children: it has a wide selection of three- and four-room family apartments with balconies in both the historic buildings as well as new buildings. Volta apartments are energy-efficient and use solar panels to produce some of the energy used in the buildings, thus helping to save costs both in summer and winter.

Greenery is one of the most valued aspects of the quarter, and the Volta Gallery Lofts homes come with a 100-square-meter personal garden-area with landscaping and a terrace, where you can spend time with family, entertain guests, play with your children or grow your own garden produce in spring, summer and autumn.

In the very middle of the quarter, a new functional park with lots of greenery and leisure areas for all ages will be built. The new park is designed to be sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the city so as to offer future residents of the quarter a private and quiet place to spend time with friends and family.

The park will feature clever and modern playgrounds for all ages, ball courts, ping-pong tables, a petanque court, and a place to exercise and spend time with your four-legged friends. Plenty of fruit trees and bushes will be planted throughout the whole park.

Parking will be entirely underground and the quiet and peaceful streets of the quarter are meant for pedestrians and cyclists alone.

In addition to the Volta daycare already up and running, a new large kindergarten will be built within the quarter.

Leisure time lies right outside your door

Comfort and accessibility are particularly important for families with children. Would it not be great if families did not have to drive to the other end of the city or out of town in order to spend quality time with the kids? This is not an issue in North Tallinn: no matter where you start your journey, you will stumble upon several cafes, playgrounds, a museum or two, the seaside or hiking trails.

Right across from Volta quarter is Kalamaja park with playgrounds and training courts and Noblessner marina with several restaurants, a cinema and a long seaside promenade with playgrounds is just a few minutes away. Proto Invention Factory, the Energy Discovery Centre and the Seaplane Harbor are also nearby.

In the opposite direction you will find the Baltic Station with its versatile food court, Telliskivi Creative City, museums and restaurants and the Old Town with plenty of entertainment. Kopli peninsula holds several beautiful parks, sandy beaches, a hiking trail along the seaside cliffs and a nature reserve.

Kindergartens and schools right next door

There are currently a total of 8 schools and 18 kindergartens in Põhja-Tallinn district, three of which are just 5-10 minutes away from Volta quarter. The objective is to enable kids to go to kindergarten and school as close to home as possible. To achieve this, the city must build new kindergartens and schools in the near future to keep up with the influx of people.

Volta quarter will be home to two daycare centers, one of which is already up and running in the Tööstuse 47B building completed a couple of years ago. A brand new kindergarten will be built in the heart of the quarter.

Another new kindergarten is planned in the Sitsi district which is a few minutes away from Volta by tram or bike. A third new kindergarten will be built at the far end of Kopli peninsula.
